Over the past two semesters of my first year of college, I have taken four creative writing classes. Each one has helped me in various ways. If you want to write even if it's just for fun, I recommend finding one that suits you and pursuing it. They are very helpful and you will learn a lot. The only thing you need is a want to write to pass.
The first class I took was Creative Writing. It was the first writing class that I had ever taken beside composition 1. My high school didn't have any creative writing courses but that didn't stop me from writing short stories instead of listing to my math teacher ramble. In Creative Writing class, we would write many different styles. We would write plays, poems, short stories, blood memories, and even mimic other writers styles. The class helped me improve my writing skills so much in just 16 weeks. It helped me be more descriptive and pay more attention to my grammar. During class, we would each be given the opportunity to share our works. Even if you don't read yours, others will read and hearing them speak is helpful because you can listen to their style and maybe it can help you. This was a great first class to take if you are interested in taking a few writing classes.
I also took Magazine Production which is basically what I am doing right now. Every other week we do a blog or an article and submit them here for the public to read. This class has been very helpful because the teacher doesn't hold your hand. You have to come up with your own ideas and you get to write about whatever interests you, but if you can't come up with an idea, the teacher will give you a helping hand (thanks, Mrs. Cervantes and Mr. Doom). It is a good class to take if you plan on working for magazines or even the paper.
This semester I am taking two writing classes. The first is Journal/Story Writing. In this class, we sit in a circle and then we have a writing prompt. We all disperse to our special place in the room and write a true story that has to deal with the prompt. This class has helped me write some of my favorite memories, most horrifying memories, and even ones that I didn't know where there. This class has helped me journal better which is something everyone should do and it has helped me open up more.
The second class is Fiction Writing. This class is a little hard to get used to because the teacher is on a screen, but it is worth it. I have learned tons about writing that I never knew. It has helped me mature in my writing and I feel that I am finally getting better. We write short stories as well as small prompts about various things. Even though you have to read loads of articles and short stories, they are all worth reading, this class is worth taking if you want to write fiction.
Now that you know about a few writing classes at Cowley, I encourage you to sign up for one even if you don't want to do it as a career. I hope to see you in a few of my classes next year.
