"Witching Hour"

A 2017 October Contest Winner: Cowley Student

Onyx night comes and bids your heart to stop

A cackling grin wears you thin to the bone

Blood vessels bulge and sweat drops start to pop

Apparitions croon in the twilight zone

Mirror in the dark, can't you hear your heart?

Crimson eyes peer from underneath the staircase

Flickering candlelight tears you apart

Bloody hand-prints linger upon your face

The call of a raven shatters the air

Your knees give out and you cannot escape

Go on, keep shrilly wailing, "who is there?"

In the distance waits a distorted shape

Cry loud, cry quick, for no one will hear

Whence comes the ghoul who shall devour your fear
