What Makes a Good Portfolio?

For creative professions, creating the perfect portfolio is super important. In our creative writing class, we are putting together our portfolios to turn in as a final project.

Even though these are for a grade, it doesn’t mean we can’t use them in the future for employment opportunities. But none of us have ever really made a portfolio before so I thought, why not kill two birds with one stone and research what makes a good portfolio and then provide feedback to our MMR readers.

"...there’s nothing more important than your portfolio. A good portfolio can help you snag the clients you are after and attract the attention of professionals that can advance your career."

In Jessica Stewart’s article, "5 Tips for Creating the Perfect Creative Portfolio," she shares some basic tips that can help you get started on planning what you are going to do with your portfolio. Her very first tip is to only include your best works, which makes sense. If the creator doesn’t love it, don’t include it in your final portfolio. Also, Stewart plays off of this tip and adds what I think is the most important advice, keep your selection versatile. With a versatile selection, those who look at your work can see you are not stuck on one subject and can adapt to different types of material.
