Thesis Statement What? What Is this thesis statement everyone keeps referring to and why on earth do I need it? Do I really need to have a thesis statement in my writing? What purpose does it serve?
Thesis statements are important and are the basis for why you are writing this particular piece. They serve a function even if they can be a big ol’ pain.
Most papers college students will be asked to write require it. So, what is it? A thesis statement according to dictonary.com is ” a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay, research paper, etc., and is developed, supported, and explained in the text by means of examples and evidence.”
So essentially, why are you writing this paper, what is the point you are attempting to convey, what do you want the reader to understand? Thesis statements are something many students struggle with. - Choose a topic
- Be specific
- Be arguable
- Create a mini-outline
- Choose your words wisely
Not so hard when you are talking about tacos. Don’t forget to do research from credible sources, format and edit your paper accordingly. The thesis statement should be the last sentence of your first paragraph. It can be helpful to restate your thesis in your conclusion for added measure.
