"Me + You → NR"

Cowley Students (Vol. 8: 2019)

Before a complete stranger approaches your eyes, there is a sidewalk.

There is the chance to catch fire, to spark, or change color.

There is always the possibility of a reaction, a synthesis, an ignition,

the possibility of us, two simple substances, coming together to create

something more complex, something greater than the sum of our parts.

Life is a system of reactions, decompositions and replacements breaking

us down and switching everything around us, even our love, which is now

just a series of atoms:

dopamine (C8H11NO2), serotonin (C10H12N2O), oxytocin (C43H66N12O12S2).

Everything bubbles up in neat glass tubes, carefully marked and astutely

observed. The results recorded, before everything is washed down the sink

and the materials cleaned of all evidence.

But then, of course, there is also the possibility that neither of us should

say a word and that we will break eye contact and continue on our way,

forgetting in mere moments the whole ordeal, cleaning ourselves of all

remnants.
